Short story: The locket
Her
The name was carved into the back of the heart-shaped locket.
Worn around my neck.
I woke up in a dark room, no memories, no belongings beyond the locket and no feelings. Nothing that came before and no hope as to what will come next.
I knew that I was a being, I understood if I pinched myself I would feel pain but I knew nothing beyond that.
A light was turned on in the room I am in. I looked around the space; bare, white walls, a bed, a chair and a desk, a pencil but no paper.
I fell asleep.
I woke up, I can hear two voices outside my door.
Person 1: Who agreed to this?
Person 2: The customer did.
Person 1: Why would she have done this?
I fell asleep again.
I was told the rules. They were simple. For the procedure to be successful I can’t know what came before or what the procedure was.
It must have worked whatever I decided for myself - as I have no recollection of it.
I wonder what comes next.
You
It was a Monday when he found her letter, left sitting on her desk, drenched in sunlight. To my darling was written at the top - she was the only person he knew still putting pen to paper to express her feelings. The letter read;
To my darling,
I wish to forget. I have tried all I can, but after careful consideration I want to forget the good and most importantly - the bad.
I am going to wipe the hard drive so to speak.
Unfortunately, to forget the darkness I must also sacrifice and forget the light - which is you my love.
The technology isn’t there for me to select between the two, so everything must go.
Anyway, don’t forget your mother’s birthday on the 26th.
I will keep the locket as my one permitted item, but if you see me again, I am but a stranger -
don’t remind me.
I paid good money to forget.
